  • Couples Counseling

Ponciano Counseling process for couples counseling follows a format that aims to ensure proper treatment planning and a good fit of Client-therapist relationship. Therapy begins with an assessment process that then informs the therapeutic framework and intervention.

    First session – Assessment

The first session is a conjoint session; in this session, the couple will provide historic information about their relationship, the reason for seeking counseling and they will relate goals for therapy.  After the first session, the couple will complete an online assessment to complement the in-person assessment process.

Second and Third sessions – Assessment

The next two sessions are individual interviews. Each partner meets with the therapist to allow for a more in-depth account of the individual’s perception of the relationship.

    Fourth session – Assessment

In the fourth session, the therapist meets with the couple to provide feedback that is information compiled from the interviews and the online assessment.  The couple along with the therapist create a treatment plan

    Therapeutic Framework

Collaborative, the couple and therapist decide on the frequency and duration of the sessions. As the couple progresses in treatment, they revisit the goals and there is constant reassessment to update the need for therapy.

    Therapeutic Interventions

The interventions are designed to help couples strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and the creation of shared meaning. Couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts.

Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes that enhance the couple’s shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed.
